Hotel Grande Bretagne, Athens
Athens was our last stop on our Honeymoon and we had just over 24 hours to explore the city. It was a whirlwind of a visit to a city with SO much history but we made sure to make the most of every minute!
First stop: The Parthenon on the Acropolis. This monument has been on my bucket list since my University of Guelph days when I took a Greek Art & Architecture course and fell in love with the entire country of Greece. It was a hot, 29 degree Monday and the Acropolis was packed with tourists. It truly was stunning up close and the detailing was really impressive to see. It was 20 euro to go up the Acropolis and see the Parthenon, however you can buy a more expensive ticket to see ALL the little theatres and extra surrounding monuments (not worth it in my opinion, the 20 euro one gave us enough access!). It's under major restoration at the moment and has been for years, but it was definitely worth seeing. It only took up an hour or two out of our day and was a must see (up close) in Athens.
I booked us into the Hotel Grande Bretagne in the heart of Athens and we fell in love with the beautiful history of this amazing Hotel & restaurant. Built in the mid 1800's, this hotel was a headquarters during the Greek War in the 1940's and housed the Prime Minister and British Military during the Greek Civil War. We were fascinated to read up on history of the Hotel Grande Bretagne, right in the lobby before heading into Alexander's Bar for a few cocktails before dinner.
Alexander's Bar is a quiet cocktail bar off the lobby of Hotel Grande Bretagne, and has been voted Best Hotel Bar in the world by Forbes Magazine (and for good reason). It has a cozy & dim atmosphere and their cocktail list is filled with unique drinks & spirits. Hanging behind the bar is a larger than life 18th century tapestry of Alexander the Great's entrance into Gaugamela, and it's one of the oldest trademark items in the Hotel. Much like the Parthenon, it was SO beautiful to see up close! We enjoyed a few drinks at Alexander's before heading to dinner at the GB Rooftop Garden.
GB Rooftop Garden
The GB Rooftop Garden Restaurant is located on the 8th floor of the Grande Bretagne and overlooks the city of Athens. From most tables, there is a clear view of the Parthenon on the Acropolis, as well as a gorgeous sunset view if you're there for dinner. They also have a bar area at the GB where they serve Whispering Angel by the glass (!!).
We started off with some amazing wine and a scallop appetizer. The food was cooked to perfection and we both really enjoyed our main courses - a Kale Risotto & a rack of Lamb.
We watched the sunset over the Parthenon and the city of Athens as we did a final cheers to our last night of our Honeymoon in Greece!
